He served as Hamilton County Clerk of Courts from 2016 to 2021 and was the first Democrat to hold this office in over 100 years. During his tenure, he brought modern and professional reforms to the Clerk’s office. He paid a living wage to all employees and become the first county officeholder in Ohio to offer comprehensive paid family leave. By ending nepotism, by cutting waste, and by making the office more professional, he saved taxpayers millions of dollars.

Bruce Harrell is an American politician and attorney serving as the 57th and current mayor of Seattle, Washington. Harrell is the first Asian American, bi-racial mayor of Seattle, after serving as the President of the city council and acting mayor of the city in 2017.

During his time on the Council, Harrell was a leader on issues of racial equity, public safety reform, and economic and educational opportunity for all. He championed Seattle’s Race and Social Justice legislation, requiring all Seattle policies to be reviewed through an equity lens. Michelle Wu is the first woman, the first person of color, and the first Asian American elected to serve as the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts. Simu is a Chinese-Canadian actor who won a Game Changer Award and People’s Choice Award for his role as Shang-Chi in the Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). Before his leading role in a Marvel movie, he played Jung Kim on the CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience (2016). He is also a writer and producer.

Immigrating from China at the age of 5, Simu was raised in Mississauga, Ontario. The 2018 Winter Olympics cemented Chloe Kim as the female face of both snowboarding and action sports. Winning an Olympic Gold Medal and scoring a 98.25 on her third and final run, Chloe became the youngest woman in history to win an Olympic snowboarding Gold medal.

Prior to the Olympics, Chloe medaled at every event she entered in the 2017-18 season, starting with Gold medals at the New Zealand World Cup, Copper Grand Prix and Dew Tour, where she officially clinched her spot on the 2018 Olympic team. Chloe made history during the 2014-15 season when she became the youngest competitor (at 14 years old) to win a winter X Games Gold medal. 2013-14 was Chloe’s breakout season. Alice Wong (she/her) is a disabled activist, writer, media maker, and consultant. She is the founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project, an online community dedicated to creating, sharing, and amplifying disability media and culture created in 2014. The Alliance coordinates and drives law firm pro bono resources on behalf of victims to assist and support them in obtaining legal remedies. Ambassador Chantale Wong was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate on February 8, 2022 as the U.S. Executive Director to the Asian Development Bank with the rank of Ambassador. Ambassador Wong has had a long and distinguished career in public service, a leader-participant in some of the most significant events in U.S. history. Until August 2016, she was the Senior Vice President at a technology startup firm, Amida Technology Solutions, where she focused on solving data interoperability challenges by developing agile, open source tools. Domee Shi is an animation director currently working at Pixar. Her short film Bao won the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Short. Her feature film debut is Turning Red, which premiered on Disney+ in March 2022.

Edward Kim is the co-founder and CTO of Gusto, a people platform used by hundreds of thousands of small businesses. He is responsible for all the software engineering, product management, and design of Gusto’s product.

This past year, thousands of young women competed to become Miss America and on December 16th, 2021, as the organization celebrated its 100th Anniversary, Emma Broyles from Anchorage, Alaska became the first Miss Alaska to earn the coveted Miss America crown and was awarded a record $100,000 in scholarship assistance.

As Miss America 2022, Emma will embark on a year of service that will take her on a national tour across the country, promoting her social impact initiative, Building Community Through Special Olympics, an organization she has volunteered with for more than 12 years.

Emma also encourages another important conversation by sharing her personal experience with ADHD along with dermatillomania, a form of OCD with chronic skin picking. “I’ve struggled with all of these things, and I am а better person as а result. Emma Raducanu is a British-Chinese professional tennis player and the current reigning US Open champion. Her US Open title was the first Grand Slam singles win by a British woman since Virginia Wade during the 1977 Wimbledon Championships.

Kumail Nanjiani is a Pakistani-American comedian, actor, and screenwriter. Lalisa Manobal, also known as LISA, is a Thai rapper, singer, and dancer based in South Korea. She is a member of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK formed by YG Entertainment.

Richa Moorjani

Poorna Jagannathan

Is an actress and producer, best known for her portrayal of Dr. Nalini Vishwakumar in Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever, which premiered globally on Netflix in April 2020 to critical and fan acclaim and has just been renewed for a fourth season. She is also known for her role as Safar Khan in HBO’s Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated show, The Night Of. Other recent television roles have included Dr. Lakshmi Chandra on Hulu’s Emmy-winning limited series The Act, Salma in the first season of Hulu’s Ramy – which has garnered nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice Awards – and Katie Richmond in the second season of HBO’s critically-acclaimed Big Little Lies. Jagannathan has been a vocal advocate on behalf of survivors of sexual violence: she initiated, produced and acted in the play Nirbhaya, by Yael Farber, which dealt with breaking the silence around sexual violence. Nirbhaya won the 2013 Amnesty International Award and was hailed as “”One of the most powerful pieces of theater you’ll ever see” by The Telegraph.
Jagannathan has fought for diverse representation in the media and, in particular, more nuanced portrayals of South Asian women. In an interview with Vogue last year, she called for complexity in casting, saying “If it were left to Hollywood, more brown representation would mean a lot more doctors, scientists and terrorists. …when we only tell those stories, we deprive ourselves and our community of the real, human issues that are going on, including addiction, depression, and the feeling of not belonging. We don’t get to present ourselves as complex beings, ones who are yearning and struggling for what we want.”

Rupi Kaur is a poet, artist, and performer. As a 21-year-old university student Rupi wrote, illustrated, and self-published her first poetry collection, milk and honey. Next came its artistic sibling, the sun and her flowers. These collections have sold over 10 million copies and have been translated into over 42 languages. Her most recent book, home body, debuted #1 on bestsellers lists across the world. In 2021, Rupi executive produced and starred in her debut film, Rupi Kaur Live, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi was born in 1978. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, Hamaguchi spent several years working in the commercial film industry before entering the graduate program in film at Tokyo University of the Arts.

He made his festival debut in San Sebastian and Tokyo FILMeX in 2008 with his graduation film PASSION. He then directed the Japanese-Korean co-production THE DEPTHS (2010), INTIMACIES (2012), and a series of documentaries, THE TOHOKU TRILOGY (THE SOUND OF THE WAVES, VOICES FROM THE WAVES, and STORYTELLERS), co-directed by Ko Sakai, from 2011 to 2013.

Hamaguchi made his first major appearance on the global stage with HAPPY HOUR, his 317-minute feature film, which premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival and went on to win major awards at numerous festivals worldwide. He followed this up with ASAKO I & II, which debuted in Competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival to universal acclaim. Hamaguchi additionally served as the co-writer of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s WIFE OF A SPY, which won the Silver Lion at the 2020 Venice Film Festival.

In 2021, Hamaguchi’s WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize.

DRIVE MY CAR was awarded Best Film at the 2021 Gotham Awards, and at both the 2021 New York Critics Circle Awards and the 2021 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, as well as winning Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the 2022 National Society of Film Critics Awards.

It has since been nominated for Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director at the 94th Academy Awards.

Sam Yam is the Co-Founder and CTO of Patreon, a platform that funds creators and artists through membership from fans. Prior to Patreon, Sam co-founded AdWhirl, which was acquired by Google in 2010. Sam is also a YCE at YCombinator and has worked at Google, Yahoo, and Stanford’s StartX. Sam graduated with a BS in CS from Stanford and is currently on leave from Stanford’s Master’s program in CS.

Sarah Burke joined Them in October, 2021. Formerly, as Special Projects Editor at VICE, she helmed projects such as The Gender Spectrum Collection, an award-winning stock photo library featuring trans and nonbinary models, Queerly Beloved, an Ellie-nominated podcast telling remarkable stories of chosen family and Transnational, a GLAAD-acclaimed docuseries about transgender rights around the world. She is a queer, mixed Pilipinx and was born and raised on O’ahu. Today, she lives in Bed-Stuy.

Derek joined 88rising in 2016 after watching Desiigner perform “Panda” live in Chinese on 88rising’s YouTube channel. He was the company’s first business hire and currently leads business development, strategy, financing, and international expansion. He is an ardent supporter of AAPI causes, especially with regards to giving Asians a bigger voice in the media.

88rising is a global music collective that focuses on celebrating Asian talent, stories, and Asian culture. Sean Miyashiro and his team manage a strong roster of Internet-breaking sensations including Rich Brian, Joji, NIKI, Higher Brothers, Stephanie Poetri, etc. More recently, Sean has partnered with K-pop idol Jackson Wang to release a number of singles under the label. Last May, Miyashiro pioneered an 88rising-centric virtual festival, Asia Rising Forever, in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. With over three million viewers worldwide, the live stream spotlighting Asian talent from across the globe in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. All proceeds raised during the event were donated to Asian Americans Advancing Justice. Sean went out to create 88rising in 2015 after noticing the lack of Asian talent in mainstream media. Almost five years later, the company has grown to be the most influential Asian music brand in the world with artists spanning across Asia.

Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher, designated hitter and outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels. Beginning his pro baseball career in Japan, he was drafted by and played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in the Pacific League of Nippon Professional Baseball from 2013 until 2017.

Breaking records and stereotypes, Ohtani had a standout year in 2021, garnering global acclaim and recognition from everyone, including the MLB commissioner for his gameplay during the season. Shou Chew is the Chief Executive Officer of TikTok where he is responsible for leading the overall business and bringing the company’s vision to life. Tan France is a television personality and the fashion guru and style expert of Netflix’s Queer Eye series. Born Tanveer Safdar, Tan grew up in a strict Pakistani Muslim family in South Yorkshire, England. When he was seven years old, he visited his grandfather’s denim factory and fell in love with fashion. Tan held on to that feeling throughout his adolescence, altering and elevating his own clothes at home before eventually studying fashion in college.

As an adult, Tan moved to London and worked corporate jobs for major retailers like Zara, Selfridges, and Chanel. Taylor Rapp is a Chinese American safety for the Los Angeles Rams and Super Bowl LVI champion. After competing for the University of Washington’s Huskies, Rapp decided to forego his final year of eligibility and declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Being one of the few Asian Americans currently playing on an NFL roster, Rapp has been an outspoken and fierce advocate for Asian American representation in the sport of football and prioritizing the importance of connecting with and showcasing his Chinese heritage on and off the field.

Teddy Park is a pioneer in music with an illustrious 20+ year career as a songwriter and producer, credited as bringing Korean music into the new era and the Creative Director/Lead Producer of BLACKPINK. Teddy is the architect behind the quartet, considered to be “the biggest girl group in the world” and holding the Guiness World Record for the most subscribed music channel on YouTube. Pachinko is an American drama television series created by Soo Hugh based on the novel of the same name by Manhattan-based author and journalist Min Jin Lee. The series is directed by Kogonada and Justin Chon, and stars Youn Yuh-jung, Lee Minho, Kim Min-ha and Jin Ha.

The drama follows four generations of a Korean immigrant family who fight to realize their dreams across Korea, Japan and America. The main protagonists are Zainichi Koreans, ethnic Koreans who came to Japan during Japanese colonial rule of Korea, and their descendants, who faced discrimination and marginalization. It premiered on Apple TV+ on March of 2022 and was renewed for a second season.

Tim Chen, CEO of NerdWallet, co-founded the personal finance company in 2009 after working on Wall Street and realizing there wasn’t enough transparency when it comes to consumer financial decisions. Born and raised in San Diego, California, Xander Schauffele fixed his sights on golf at the young age of 10.

His father, a graduate of San Diego Golf Academy (now Golf Academy of America), encouraged his interest and to this day is his only swing coach. Schauffele played golf for Scripps Ranch High School, then Long Beach State University and San Diego State University.

Among other early accolades, he won the individual title of the 2011 California State High School Championship and is the 2014 California State Amateur champion.

He began his college career at Long Beach State University under then coach Ryan Ressa. There, Xander garnered Big West Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Big West awards in 2012.

For his sophomore year Xander transferred to San Diego State University to play for the SDSU Aztecs, where he still holds several seasonal and career records. After graduating with a degree in Social Sciences in 2015, Xander played Web.com Q-School that same fall. There he succeeded in securing playing privileges for the 2016 Web.com Tour season.

After a solid first season on the Web.com Tour, Xander finished in 26th position at the end of regular season play, a mere US$ 900.00 short of earning a PGA Tour card.

In the ensuing Web.com Playoffs Xander did finish in 15th position securing his privileges for PGA Tour membership the hard way.

Xander finished his first PGA Tour season with a solid run beginning with a T5 at the 2017 US Open and ending with being the first ever rookie to win the PGA Tour Championship.

His 2-win season (2017 Greenbrier Classic; 2017 Tour Championship) earned Xander the Rookie of the Year award for the 2016-2017 season.
