Oscar-nominated Dev Patel catapulted to success in 2009 when he starred in the Academy Award-winning film SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. He received rave reviews for his performance which garnered several award wins including the National Board of Review Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, The British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer, and The Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Actor. In this film, Patel’s character recounts his upbringing in the slums of India while he is accused of cheating on the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Since then, Patel has expanded his repertoire with acclaimed roles on both big and small screens.
Patel recently completed production on A24’s GREEN KNIGHT for director David Lowery, a fantasy epic retelling of the medieval tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. He recently went into pre-production on his feature directorial debut with MONKEY MAN, a script he co-wrote and is also producing alongside Basil Iwanyk. The film centers on the Kid (Patel), who emerges from prison to grapple with a world marred by corporate greed and eroding spiritual values.
In March 2019, Patel starred in and executive produced Anthony Maras’ HOTEL MUMBAI, opposite Armie Hammer and Jason Isaacs. The film tells the true story about the Mumbai attacks in 2008 at the Taj Mahal Palace and was released by Bleeker Street on March 22, 2019. He also wrapped filming on THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD in the title role, written and directed by Armando Iannucci and based on the novel David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. Patel stars opposite Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi, and Hugh Laurie.
On the small screen, Patel stars in Amazon Studios’ upcoming anthology series MODERN LOVE based on the popular New York Times column and weekly podcast. The series, created by filmmaker John Carney and produced by Storied Media Group and The New York Times, will consist of half-hour episodes that “explore love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms.”
Patel currently resides in Los Angeles.
