Angeline Chen

Angeline Chen grew up in China and attended UCSD with a B.A in Economics and Political Science and a Masters in Economic Development and International Affairs. During school, she found yoga and philosophy in which she discovered her inner artist. She was passionate to explore the transformational power of art to catalyze social and environmental change. Upon discovering her love for coral reefs and witnessing their rapid death, she co-founded Global Coralition, a NGO dedicated to rebuilding our marine ecosystems and creating climate resilience for coastal communities. Global Coralition builds large-scale, culturally impactful sculptures deployed into the ocean to catalyze marine protection, coral farming and mangrove restoration. Their pilot project is in the Dominican Republic where they deployed Atabey, the Mother of Water from the Arawak indigenous culture of the Caribbean. Today, there is a locally led, land-based coral farm growing hundreds of baby corals each month and they have planted over 500,000 mangroves in the upstream lagoona. They emphasize empowering women, fishermen and youth and creating ecotourism and education models in local communities. Their mission is to scale this model across the 50 reef sites, on a mission to revive our oceans for a globally sustainable future.
