Ichiro Suzuki

Baseball Outfielder, Seattle Mariners

Ichiro Suzuki is a legendary Japanese outfielder whose career redefined the landscape for international position players in Major League Baseball. After nine dominant seasons with the Orix Blue Wave in Japan, where he won seven consecutive batting titles, he debuted for the Seattle Mariners in 2001 and immediately transformed the league. He became just the second player in history to win both the Rookie of the Year and American League MVP awards in the same season while leading the Mariners to a record-tying 116 wins. He retired in 2019 with 3,089 MLB hits, which, combined with his 1,278 hits in Japan, gives him a professional total of 4,367—the most of any player in top-tier professional baseball.

Ichiro’s legacy has been formally enshrined among the greatest to ever play the game. In early 2025, he made history by becoming the first Japanese and Asian-born player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, receiving 99.7% of the vote in his first year of eligibility. His impact on the city of Seattle was further immortalized on April 10, 2026, when the Mariners unveiled a bronze statue of him outside T-Mobile Park and officially retired his number 51. Today, he continues to serve as a special assistant to the Mariners’ chairman, where his philosophy of technical perfection and discipline continues to influence a new generation of players across the globe.
